Frequently asked questions
Pricing & Subscription
How does Kickstarter pricing work?
BirdieSense is live on Kickstarter. Back the campaign and choose a reward tier to lock in early-bird pricing. The $799 package tier includes the main hardware unit and its dedicated tripod/mount.
Early-bird rewards are limited. Current tiers, add-ons, and estimated delivery dates are listed on the Kickstarter campaign page.
Is there going to be a monthly fee or recurring fee to access any of the features?
All BirdieSense features included at launch will remain subscription-free for Kickstarter backers. Future features that do not require substantial third-party API or cloud-compute costs will also be included at no additional charge. Optional services with significant ongoing external costs may be offered separately in the future.
Features & Applications
How do BirdieSense’s swing analysis and tracking ball data features work?
BirdieSense uses dual high-speed cameras and AI computer vision to track your 18-joint 3D body motion and shot metrics in real time, giving you instant AI swing coaching on the range or indoors. We’ve published our About Us page, which breaks down our underlying technology and how we capture and calculate ball and club data.
Will BirdieSense be compatible with GSPro or any of the other sim software?
GSPro and E6: no direct software integration at launch. Integration is on the development roadmap for future updates; no release date has been announced.
Core focus: Rather than rendering virtual courses on a screen, BirdieSense focuses on real-time 3D body motion tracking, video capture, AI swing coaching, and on-course strategy—features that standard simulator software doesn’t provide.
Simulator companion: Using BirdieSense alongside a simulator or hitting net is different from a direct software integration.
Practice & on-course use: It’s built for both practice (driving range/home) and live rounds (precise GPS yardages, automatic swing recording, and performance analysis on the course).
Will it work for left-handed golfers as well?
Currently, BirdieSense is tuned specifically for right-handed golfers. The great advantage of BirdieSense is that it uses a vision-based system. This makes our technology highly flexible. Adapting it for left-handed golfers is primarily an algorithmic challenge rather than a hardware one, which means it can be solved via software updates.
Regarding the roadmap, our current estimation is to complete the algorithm development and begin rolling out left-handed support in early 2027. We plan to share more R&D detail in our upcoming campaign updates so you can track our progress. Stay tuned!
Where is the unit placed and what is the minimum distance from the golfer required?
The unit is placed directly behind the ball at a distance of roughly 2 club lengths.
Will BirdieSense require any special golf ball?
No special balls required. You can use any standard golf ball you like. Our visual tracking system doesn’t require marked balls, metallic dots, or special stickers.
Is the battery replaceable?
BirdieSense has a built-in rechargeable battery and is not user-replaceable. Course Mode provides up to 6 hours of battery life; Range Mode provides up to 3 hours. Actual battery life varies with usage and operating conditions.
What are the minimum/maximum distances behind the ball, and how much flight is needed to track the ball?
Unit distance behind ball: Place the unit between 2 meters (min) and 3 meters (max) directly behind the ball (roughly 6.5 to 10 feet).
Required ball flight: There is no strict distance requirement for ball flight. As long as the ball gets into the air and isn’t rolling along the ground, it will track your shots across irons and woods. Putter tracking is currently under development.
Is it optical launch monitor or radar tracking?
BirdieSense is an optical (vision-based) system, not radar.
Dual high-speed cameras: High-speed stereo cameras combined with AI computer vision capture both your swing movement and ball flight in real time.
Full-body 3D motion analysis: The optical system tracks 18 key 3D skeleton joints for body rotation, posture, and club path throughout the swing.
Precision ball tracking: On the range, the optics capture launch metrics (ball speed, launch angle, shot direction, and more) and track actual ball flight without radar frequencies.
How do I switch between Indoor and Outdoor modes?
Switching modes is done directly in the BirdieSense App:
Power on & connect: Turn on your BirdieSense unit and connect it to your mobile device via the app.
Start a new session: Tap New Practice Session on the main dashboard.
Outdoor mode: Choose this on the driving range or live course. This enables full optical ball flight tracking, shot metrics, and 3D body motion capture.
Indoor mode: Choose this in an indoor simulator setup. The optical sensors capture your full 18-joint 3D skeleton motion and read the shot data displayed on your simulator screen.
Frame your shot: Use the in-app video alignment preview to ensure your full body is in frame.
What’s in the box? (Tripods & accessories)
Included: The main BirdieSense hardware unit and its dedicated unit tripod/mount are included in the $799 Kickstarter package tier.
Add-ons: The secondary face-on phone tripod shown in some of our media is an optional add-on available as a Kickstarter pledge add-on.
Will BirdieSense also act as a rangefinder on course?
Yes. Using its optical computer vision system, BirdieSense can measure the exact distance to your target or flag, as shown in our video demonstration of a precise 56-yard target read.
In addition to analyzing your 18-joint 3D skeleton motion and shot metrics, you can use it on the course or practice green to measure distance to the target before you swing.
How accurate is BirdieSense?
These ranges represent typical performance under standard operating conditions from development testing samples, not cherry-picked best-case scenarios. More detailed final measurements will follow further testing.
Carry distance: Typically within ~3–5% of TrackMan (calculated from measured ball speed, launch angle, and club speed).
Club path: Typically within ~1.0° (directly tracked via computer vision keypoints on the clubhead).
Face angle & face-to-path: Typically within ~1.0°–1.5° of directional variance (calculated from measured path, launch direction, and initial trajectory).
Spin rate & spin axis: Spin rate is typically within ~200–500 RPM. It is designed to identify your spin profile (high-spin vs. low-spin) and shot-shape axis (draw vs. fade bias) rather than single-digit RPM precision.
How does BirdieSense help me review and analyze my swing?
The app uses simplified, keypoint-focused video playback for efficient swing review.
Video playback: Replay recorded high-speed swing videos in the app alongside your 3D biomechanics data. Fast and slow playback can be selected.
Key swing phase navigation: Quick-jump landmarks go to Address, Top of Backswing, Impact, and Finish so you can inspect critical positions without manual timeline scrubbing.
Can I view and rotate my 3D swing from different angles?
Freely rotatable 360° view: Multi-view optical computer vision reconstructs a spatial 3D model, so the skeleton is not locked to a fixed angle.
Custom perspectives: In the 3D viewer, swipe to rotate, tilt, and zoom. Inspect from Down-The-Line, Face-On, or any arbitrary 3D angle.
Are the biomechanical metrics synchronized with my swing video?
Dynamic data sync: Yes. Metrics including shoulder rotation, hip rotation, pelvis sway/thrust depth, spine angle stability, weight distribution, and kinematic sequencing stay synced with your swing video. Toggle different markings on the pose and they update frame by frame.
Live gauges: As you move through key swing positions, the corresponding numerical angles and body-movement metrics update on screen.
Does BirdieSense support side-by-side swing comparison?
Side-by-side or overlay swing comparison is under development and is planned for the current software release. That’s how we help you find your most efficient swing: by comparing you against yourself.
Are there storage limits, retention periods, or restrictions on exporting and sharing video or 3D playback?
Storage & retention: Swings are saved locally on your mobile device with cloud sync options. As a backer with lifetime app access, there are no subscription-based deletion periods or artificial limits on how long your swing history is retained. Phone and unit storage is still finite, so a more specific retention strategy will ship at release.
Export & sharing: You can export high-definition swing video clips (with optional metric overlays) to your camera roll to share or send to an instructor. The 3D skeleton overlay is viewable in-app during review and is not included in the exported video file.
Are there app interface and video walkthroughs?
To see 3D skeleton rendering, tracking, and real-world testing in action, watch PGA Coach Andrew Tricker test BirdieSense on our official YouTube video or visit birdiesense.com. Additional app UI walkthroughs will continue to be posted as we approach campaign fulfillment.
What is the distance between the equipment and the person?
Main unit (Down-The-Line): Placed 2.0 meters (approx. 6.5 feet) directly behind the golf ball along your target line.
Height: Set the unit between 20 to 50 cm (8 to 20 inches) off the ground using its mount or tripod.
Phone setup (optional): For full 3D posture analysis, the phone can be calibrated and placed Face-On within 1.0 meter (approx. 3.3 feet) at an angle. Tracking ball and club data on the main unit does not require a phone setup.
